2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the need for a clearer game identity.
The president noted that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to address player expectations.
The news mirrors a comparable move taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete message from the president's communication:
Dear Team—
I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most driven and innovative designers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re eager for that partnership to endure.”
With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a sharper brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to heart and overhauled the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its promise to our players.
The trust in this project strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce the new hire as the latest Director of 31st Union. After a period of talks, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and experience in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having devoted the past decade and a half producing and overseeing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in welcoming him soon. We are all excited to keep seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to come.
The President
The appointee presently serves in the position of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 together with a public demo. Then, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch explains. "Challenge the competition with unique powers, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every match. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or take a risk, gamble everything, and hope your squad can achieve the highest spot? The decision is in your hands."
The game lacks an official release date or platforms, but enthusiasts can look forward to further news as creation continues.
