Man City 3-0 Manchester United: Hemp scores in Manchester City dominant win.

Similar to the recent storm swept through the north-west the night before, City blew United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement 3-0 win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their leadership claims as they reinforced their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Losses for Manchester United

This result marked back-to-back league losses for Skinner's side for the first time since spring 2024, leaving them seven points off the top team with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

United’s ability to balance domestic and continental football with a thin roster has been a hotly discussed topic since they secured entry to the UCL. Considering the fixture list, it always felt like this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this capability. Regrettably for the opposition, they looked tired throughout, the historic win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Skinner had tried to make changes with a a few alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all added vigor, although the dropping of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

City, in contrast, have no such workload concerns. The City coach made one change from the previous win over Everton with Hemp making her return to the lineup since returning from injury.

Commanding Opening Period

Her passes were causing problems and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg cleared off the line.

United had multiple attacks ahead, their straightforward approach giving them options in the flanks but they could not test the City goalkeeper. Manchester City, meanwhile, controlled possession, probing their opponents and trying to pull them out of their structure.

Scoring Spree

They turned chances into goals with almost half an hour played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A cross to the back post was directed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was City’s seventh headed goal of the term.

They extended their lead with two more goals just before the break. When Rose was permitted to maraud through the midfield from defense, the play opened up for the hosts. The influential Casparij collected the pass on the right side before sending a pinpoint ground pass for Shaw to force home. Shortly later, they had a third after a quick change in the ball saw Hemp afforded the room to drive a shot home from outside the box.

Final Period

The most obvious adjustment came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Park came closest, striking the post, but the visitors were creatively abject and were unable to record a one shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have added to their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it did not affect the result to the hosts. After failing to defeat any opponent who finished above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a favorable situation after nine games.
