The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
