Thousands Left Without Power in Queensland and Victorian Regions Following Powerful Storms

Around twenty-five thousand homes in Queensland's southeast were left experiencing outages on Monday's dawn after severe thunderstorms passed over the state, bringing wind gusts reaching 109km/h.

Massive Hailstones and Widespread Damage

Residents reported substantial frozen pellets measuring up to 7cm in particular locations. Meteorological experts confirmed that multiple regions across the state had been impacted by large hailstones.

Response teams were focused on reestablishing power throughout the affected regions, with nearly 70 crews deployed to manage the widespread outages.

Victoria's Climate Difficulties

Simultaneously, approximately one thousand households in the southern state also faced electricity disruptions after the metropolitan area recorded its wettest day in 18 months.

Emergency response teams responded to nearly 600 calls for help across the region, mostly for building damage but also for downed trees and inundation.

  • Hoppers Crossing suburb - various assistance requests
  • Wyndham - nearly 180 emergency requests

At one point on yesterday, more than 28k electricity consumers in the state were lacking electricity.

Climate Outlook

Humid circumstances were predicted to continue along much of the state's eastern regions this week as a weather pattern continued to pull in damp air against the shoreline.

Tuesday was forecast to be the heaviest precipitation period, with ongoing thunderstorm potential expected across different parts of both areas.

Health Warning

Health officials warned that there was an higher risk of weather-related respiratory issues across the state's northern country region, particularly given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This warning comes after past events where similar conditions led to substantial respiratory problems in the state.
