Van de Ven Double Halts Everton's Unbeaten Streak at Brand New Stadium

Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
