Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to question specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
